this note– one that was buried deep in my centimetre-thick phone– was recently exhumed:

~
in march of 2016, five pasty exchange program kids from toronto checked in at pearson airport with clear eyes, full hearts and almost-oversized suitcases– one of those kids being me. between being fed ostrich biltong, trying* to surf and breakfast club-esque library congregations, if there's one thing that strings all these memories together it would have to be that none of them would have ever happened if i hadn't signed myself up for exchange in the first place.
you have to go out and see the world to find out how much you're really missing out on, even if you dive out there headfirst with a haircut that was definitely way too short to grow out in 30 days.
anywho... i tend to remember periods of my life as colours. this one is a grassy, wet-haired, flip-flop green

due to a lack of documentation, we weren't allowed to board the plane to johannesburg once we reached london– but i had the best company to tour camden town with the next day (albeit having to wear the same clothes for 20+ hours!)

in other words, march was
sitting on cooler boxes, trevor noah, hawaii five-0, chocolate frios, nighttime spar runs, geckos (!!), uma thurman, cordials, sydney's hamilton playlist, the best curry i've ever had, getting my boot heels stuck in camden town cobblestone, milo (and lots of it), nandos encounters, twenty one pilots, "ja"s, paul's love for sushi, zoe's cupcakes, chicken and cheese sandwiches, climbing over fences, deadpool, ramen and murder mysteries, allie's remarkable shark freakout, drizzly beaches, piercing rebellion, being horrendous at golf, xylophones, pj movie nights, footballs stuck in backyard trees, hallway mornings, fireboy and watergirl at the back of the class, zuma shade, braais, twin dogs, a persian cat, phone 'protection', long car rides, 6 foot 5 journalists, noa's airport hysteria, freezer-burnt ben & jerry's, lightning storms, meg's v-neck sunburn (or as she calls it, a "redneck"), spud, golf balls in the pool, slopes slopes slopes slopes slopes, and being terrified that i may have messed up the electricity whenever the power went out (aka load shedding)... every damn time
~
big thank you to antonia and the grindrods for showing me around south africa and making me feel welcome, that goes for everyone else i have met along the way as well– i appreciate it a lot xx
